After an extended season of growth and preparation, the Ley’s unexpectedly had their calling paused while God called them to lead a church in Northeast Ohio for a time. It was a great season in which to hone their ministry skills and raise their children. Then after 7 years the Lord called Doug & Paula to leave their idyllic life and fulfill the calling He gave in 1982. So they sold their house, gave away their possessions and packed up suitcases and moved to the Middle East where they served in Bible Colleges and Seminaries, teaching and making disciples. Upon returning from serving 12 years in the Middle East by a call from their home church, the Lord birthed a new vision in their hearts. So again Doug & Paula responded to God's call to begin a faith-based ministry to help Believers world-wide…truly, Serving Beyond all Borders. We believe that one of the most effective ways to do this is through national workers—believers who already have language, culture, and can establish lasting ministries among their own people. That’s why in 2020 SBB founded and launched a Church Planting Institute * led by national pastors and teachers. This involves training men and women, who then go.…and plant churches throughout their own country. While large congregations have their place, we’ve seen that small, multiplying fellowships spreading like wildfire continue to reach people in this part of the world. Telios Evangelical Apologetics Ministries (TEAM). This emerging work is born out of a growing need across East Africa to respond to weak theology, syncretism, and the false prosperity gospel that has taken root in many parts of the church. TEAM is launching an apologetics training school to equip pastors and Believers to stand firm in sound doctrine and engage their communities with truth. The ministry is led onsite by a group of humble, capable, spiritual and seasoned Ethiopian leaders with a deep conviction and a shared passion for truth, and who are invested in doing the work of ministry. SBB is doing their part to help every man and women have the opportunity to hear the Word of God in their mother-tongue by partnering directly with Wycliffe Bible Translators. SBB has served Wycliffe by helping to keep their cross-cultural workers on the field spiritually healthy. SBB is passionate about helping people not only hear the Gospel but also understand and live it. One way we have done this is by supporting Bible literacy projects by providing training and resources that help villagers learn to read the Bible for themselves. In addition, SBB has helped equip village church leaders with Bible training meetings located deep in a tropical rainforest—one of the most remote regions in the world. There, dedicated believers are trained in biblical studies and pastoral ministry, preparing them to shepherd their communities with wisdom. After one trip where Doug spent two weeks in one of the most remote places on earth, the leaders expressed their thanks for coming to teach them the Word of God. One man stood up and said, "Thank you for equipping us! Now we are better equipped to preach the Gospel to the remote areas of the world." (Amazing! We have been able to offer counseling, encouragement, and direct support to see this ministry enlarge as it seeks to reach an area of Africa that is among the poorest of the poor.
